Exchanging just six messages over live chat makes a visitor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/why-live-chat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">250% more likely<\/a> to become a customer.<\/p>\n<p>But as powerful as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/live-chat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">live chat<\/a> is, it has one challenge you also find in email and many other digital channels \u2013 if you can&#8217;t see or hear your leads, how do you quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/hi-buy-6-live-chat-etiquette-tips-sales-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">establish rapport<\/a> with them?<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote-style-one\"><p>&#8220;Stories help you build trust by communicating value in ways that people are known to respond to&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s what makes storytelling so impactful when you&#8217;re selling through live chat. Stories help you build trust by communicating your product\u2019s value in ways that people are <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2014\/10\/why-your-brain-loves-good-storytelling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scientifically known<\/a> to remember and respond to. For B2B buyers, having an emotional connection to a brand is paramount, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkwithgoogle.com\/marketing-resources\/promotion-emotion-b2b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they&#8217;re willing to pay for it too<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve talked to hundreds of leads over live chat, and in my experience, there are only three things you need to keep in mind to tell stories that sell.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-steps-to-tell-effective-stories-in-live-chat\">3 steps to tell effective stories in live chat<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Talk like a human, walk like a human<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s easy advice to ignore and hard to nail, but it all starts here: embrace being human. Just because you\u2019re talking through a computer screen, doesn\u2019t mean you have to be robotic. More often than not, it\u2019s the small things \u2013 a funny GIF, a well-placed emoji \u2013 that sets the stage for a personal and meaningful conversation with your prospect.<\/p>\n<p>A great example is your opening line. Imagine you\u2019re a lead writing in: would you rather be greeted with, \u201cHey there! I\u2019m Jessica from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/sales-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sales team<\/a> \ud83d\ude0a\u201d or \u201cWelcome to Intercom. Let me know how I can assist you.\u201d? In the same way that all great stories invite the reader to dive deeper, adopting a conversational tone will encourage your lead to continue chatting.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Storytelling-live-chat-human.png\" alt=\"Storytelling in live chat - Talk like a human\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>2. Take a genuine interest in your prospect<\/h3>\n<p>In sales, our most valuable resource is our time. It\u2019s the limiting factor for how many leads we can chat to and as a result, how quickly we\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/5-strategies-hit-sales-quota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hit our quota<\/a>. While it might be tempting to speed through your conversations with prospects, resist that urge. Only by taking the time to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pandadoc.com\/effective-sales-prospecting-tips-for-sales-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">understand your prospect\u2019s business<\/a> can you craft a story that speaks to their needs and your product\u2019s value to them.<\/p>\n<p>The best place to start is with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/tips-for-lead-qualification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">qualification questions<\/a>. I use them to gain a picture of how my leads currently work, their pain points and opportunities for Intercom to solve a real problem. For instance, when I chat with prospects who are having trouble acquiring leads, I\u2019ll point them to our Messenger and explain how it can help them capture their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/invisible-sales-pipeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">invisible pipeline of leads<\/a> \u2013 that is, all the visitors landing on their website who aren\u2019t filling out a contact form. I\u2019ll even mock up the Messenger on their homepage to help them visualize the story I\u2019m telling.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Storytelling-live-chat-convo1.png\" alt=\"Example Messenger - Storytelling in live chat\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>3. Share real customer case studies<\/h3>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/podcasts\/emergence-capital-doug-landis-on-telling-stories-that-sell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Landis<\/a>, Box&#8217;s former Chief Storyteller, recently reminded us, our job as sales people is to build credibility and the absolute best way to do that is by using the voice of our customers. The most effective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/make-customer-enthusiasm-work-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">case studies<\/a> put prospects in our customer&#8217;s shoes and encourage them to imagine how much better, easier, more efficient their lives will be once they\u2019ve adopted our product. The key is personalizing how you present those case studies.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote-style-one\"><p>&#8220;The most convincing story you can tell is one about your current customers\u2019 success&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let me give you an example. Imagine Sarah from Examply shares that she\u2019s interested in using live chat to acquire leads but not sure her team has the bandwidth to respond to every message. I could share our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/customers\/salesloft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salesloft case study<\/a>, which highlights how they increased demos by 8X with live chat. But it\u2019d be far more effective to share <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/how-marketers-are-using-custom-bots-to-drive-more-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how Snapt uses Custom Bots<\/a> to qualify and book meetings at scale, without additional headcount.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/snapt-case-study.png\" alt=\"Snapt Custom Bots Case Study\" \/><br \/>\nA well-chosen customer case study helps prospects visualize the path to their desired outcome \u2013 in this case, acquiring more leads. But it doesn\u2019t stop there; it also takes into account their motivations and constraints. Our job is to pick the right story.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-power-of-stories-that-sell\">The power of stories that sell<\/h2>\n<p>Telling stories can transform back and forth exchanges over live chat into the start of meaningful prospect relationships. To be successful, engage your prospects in an authentic, human way, prove to them you can relate to their problems and provide real evidence of how your product can deliver these solutions. Remember, your prospects aren\u2019t just buying your product.
