{"id":23433,"date":"2020-04-06T18:53:03","date_gmt":"2020-04-06T17:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/?p=23433"},"modified":"2020-09-17T11:10:32","modified_gmt":"2020-09-17T10:10:32","slug":"reading-list-people-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/reading-list-people-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading list: Lessons learned about people management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the coming weeks, I, along with others on the team, will be selecting and sharing articles from the Inside Intercom archives that have proven helpful to our customers and visitors in the past.<\/p>\n<p>With so many of us looking for positive outlets for our increased time at home at the moment, we hope these articles can be helpful again. They may even prove a small distraction from what can seem like universally bad news right now. I\u2019m kicking things off by sharing some pieces that have helped me (hopefully) get better at managing people.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"people-before-product-and-profit\">People before product and profit<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/intercom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/people-product-profit.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At Intercom we firmly believe that people are the most important thing \u2013 your product and ultimately profits will follow if you get the people thing right. (\u201cTake care of the people, products and profits in that order,\u201d being a phrase used by former Netscape CEO Jim Barskdale and subsequently popularized by Ben Horowitz in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hard-Thing-About-Things-Building\/dp\/0062273205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hard Thing About Hard Things<\/a><\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>So while Inside Intercom built its reputation as a source of advice on building great products, some of the most impactful lessons that have remained with me from helping colleagues publish their insights on this blog are all about people rather than product.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote-style-one\"><p>&#8220;All behavior &#8211; good and bad &#8211; can scale&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If there\u2019s one person at Intercom who is synonymous with distilling actionable product insights it\u2019s our co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/author\/des\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Des<\/a>. But at our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/videos\/behind-the-scenes-the-inside-intercom-world-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017 Inside Intercom World Tour<\/a> he surprised a lot of attendees with a talk about the people aspects of running a fast growing company and the common problems you face as you add more people to your company.<\/p>\n<p>He shared insights such as how all behavior &#8211; good and bad &#8211; can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/scale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scale<\/a> and how you can manage that as well as the need for hierarchy, even at an early stage. It\u2019s an honest and entertaining talk that anyone who manages people will benefit from. The key takeaway for me? The medium matters. Face to face feedback is so important because you can see if the message has landed or you need to adjust it. Sorry Slack.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 200px; border: 0 none;\" src=\"https:\/\/art19.com\/shows\/inside-intercom\/episodes\/3db9a314-b646-46bb-82a3-769709040b98\/embed\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-value-of-values\">The value of values<\/h2>\n<p>An early lightbulb moment for me personally when I moved to Intercom from a 150-year-old media company was the importance placed on team values. In the media world, values seemed like something rigid and dusty that were holding us back from adapting to a rapidly changing world.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote-style-two\"><p>&#8220;Values seemed like something rigid and dusty that were holding us back&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They seemed to run contrary to what is needed to manage a rapidly growing company, but Intercom\u2019s R&amp;D org soon changed my thinking on that. Our Senior Product Engineer Waheed made the argument most succinctly in this post about the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/the-engineering-values-we-live-by\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">building strong values if you want to build great products<\/a>. (If you\u2019d like a take on values from a marketing perspective, Stewart, our former director of brand design, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/brand-studio-values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shared his team\u2019s values<\/a> and why they are so important to the team.)<\/p>\n<p>In fact our engineering team have shared some of the most actionable advice on the people side of business &#8211; whether that\u2019s Rich\u2019s cautionary tales of management overconfidence in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/people-leave-managers-not-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">People leave managers not companies<\/a> or John Looney\u2019s deep dive on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/psychological-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the importance of psychological safety<\/a> if you want to create high functioning teams.
