But, we all work together in unison to try and make this product.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"laura-klein-on-improving-chemistry-in-product-teams\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laura Klein on improving chemistry in product teams<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an engineer, UX designer, product manager, and startup advisor for more than 20 years, VP of Product at the Business Talent Group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/podcasts\/laura-klein-product-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laura Klein has seen it all<\/a>, and written the books to prove it: UX for Lean Startups and Build Better Products. Two years ago, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/podcasts\/laura-klein-product-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joined us on our podcast to reveal why assembling a great product team is like pulling off a heist<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Laura Klein on improving chemistry in product teams\" src=\"https:\/\/art19.com\/shows\/inside-intercom\/episodes\/e6eec06f-34b8-4292-b177-5252c15c35e2\/embed#?secret=cagHZCgJz0\" data-secret=\"cagHZCgJz0\" width=\"500\" height=\"200\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key takeaway:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThink about your favorite heist team: You have the leader who\u2019s getting the gang back together for the one last job, after which they\u2019re all going to retire to the beach. They always put together a team of specialists and experts, and it\u2019s a team that is comfortable working together often, sometimes after some fighting. But usually by the time they\u2019re ready for the heist, there\u2019s a lot of trust there.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"why-messiness-is-a-good-thing-for-product-teams\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why messiness is a good thing for product teams<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe best laid schemes o&#8217; mice an&#8217; men \/ Gang aft a-gley,\u201d as the 18th-century Scottish poet Robert Burns put it. Indeed, you don\u2019t need too much experience on a product team to have painful experience of how even the best plans often go awry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/why-messiness-is-a-good-thing-for-product-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">counterintuitive argument<\/a>, Senior Product Manager Brian Donohue says we should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/why-messiness-is-a-good-thing-for-product-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">embrace the mess<\/a> \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s not just unavoidable, but actually necessary. If harnessed correctly, the mess of building product can be a real benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/intercom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/order-to-mess.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key takeaway:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re shooting for something that\u2019s really great, remember that creativity is inherently chaotic and uncertain. You have to expect it to be that way. You can contain this mess with your pillars \u2013 the foundation of your mission and vision, the principles of how you work \u2013 but fight the gravitational pull towards order. Because if it\u2019s not messy, and you\u2019re convinced you know exactly what you\u2019re doing, you\u2019re probably on the road to irrelevance.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"healthy-tension-in-product-teams\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy tension in product teams<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/healthy-tension-in-product-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reflection on the qualities of excellent product teams<\/a>, our Senior Director of Product Design, Emmet Connolly, invokes Buckminster Fuller\u2019s famous geodesic dome, which boasts exceptional structural tensional integrity \u2013 \u201dSimply by arranging the struts in the correct relation to each other, something much stronger and bigger than its individual parts can be created.\u201d The geodesic dome, Emmet suggests, is a powerful metaphor for high-performing product teams, which are marked by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/healthy-tension-in-product-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creative tension between the different disciplines<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/intercom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Richard-Buckminster-Fuller-dome.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key takeaway:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTeams are relationships, and without a little pressure and willingness to push one another to do better, excellence can be an early casualty of collaboration. A team that\u2019s unwilling to hold one another to a high standard will quickly see that standard slip.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"building-empathy-in-a-product-team\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building empathy in a product team<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This talk by our former Senior Product Researcher, Sinead Cochrane, details the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/building-empathy-in-a-product-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">importance of cultivating user empathy among product teams<\/a>, in order to stay dialled in to the needs of their customers. The best way to do that is to bring PMs, designers and engineers closer to the research process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrapper oembed--youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Building empathy for better product - Sin\u00e9ad Cochrane\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RMoa84eB1oo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Key takeaway:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cObserving research is often perceived as a distraction from doing real work like coding or designing. However, as a researcher I\u2019ve seen first-hand the positive impact of giving engineers an opportunity to listen to customers describe how they work, and observe them using the actual products the engineers are building.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"reflection-a-key-ingredient-to-great-product-teams\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflection: a key ingredient to great product teams<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We learn by doing, as Principal Product Designer Gustavs Cirulis points out in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/reflection-the-key-to-great-product-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this thoughtful essay<\/a>. But to become more effective, we need to make time to reflect on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019re \u201cdoing.\u201d At Intercom, Gustavs writes, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/reflection-the-key-to-great-product-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reflection happens at an individual, team, and company level<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/intercom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/A_Key_Ingredient_to_Successful_Teams_Inline.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key takeaway:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s tempting to stop reflecting when pressure is high and time is low. Yet that\u2019s the most impactful time to do it. Reflecting on how you work will increase your performance by allowing you to focus on the right things and improve how you collaborate with your team.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"product-managers-should-not-build-the-roadmap-the-product-team-should\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product managers should not build the roadmap. The product team should<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the classic product team structure, responsibility for the roadmap belongs to the product manager. But it shouldn\u2019t necessarily be that way, suggests former Intercom Product Manager Ulaize Hernandez Troyas \u2013\u00a0instead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/product-managers-should-not-build-the-roadmap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high-functioning product teams should have a collective ownership of the roadmap<\/a>, leading to better outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote-style-two\"><p>&#8220;We have reduced friction between teammates, which has saved us from long-winded conversations that stemmed from misunderstandings&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Key takeaway:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis type of ongoing communication throughout the prioritization process has a definite cost, but the number of benefits from this approach is worth it. We have reduced friction between teammates, which has saved us from long-winded conversations that stemmed from misunderstandings. The sense of ownership and purpose has increased the team\u2019s motivation.
