{"id":27280,"date":"2022-05-13T15:59:27","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T14:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/?p=27280"},"modified":"2022-10-26T14:58:45","modified_gmt":"2022-10-26T13:58:45","slug":"faq-what-is-the-customer-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/faq-what-is-the-customer-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the customer journey?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/built-for-you-april\/\"><b>customer journey<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be defined as the interactions a customer has with your brand from the very first time they engage with you to the point of purchase. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s another way of saying the customer lifecycle, or the steps your customers take from the time they first become aware of your brand to the point at which they become your brand\u2019s biggest advocate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-steps-of-the-customer-journey\"><b>What are the steps of the customer journey?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time the customer journey begins when customers learn about your brand through a marketing campaign or through word of mouth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there they might visit your website where they can explore your products and\/or services, read client reviews and testimonials, and form initial opinions about your brand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ideal next step in the customer journey is that those curious customers see value in what you\u2019re offering and make a purchase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At each phase of the customer journey there are touchpoints. These are points in which a customer comes in contact with your brand and where you can communicate with them to grab their attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Touchpoints include website content, social media content, email content, sales interactions, and customer service interactions, each designed to increase <\/span><b>customer engagement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the likelihood of making a sale (or multiple sales).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may find that you need several touchpoints along the path to purchase \u2013 identifying these interactions is a process known as <\/span><b>touchpoint mapping<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-a-customer-journey-map\"><b>What is a customer journey map?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often companies create something called customer journey maps to visualize how their customers arrive at a given destination, whatever that might be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suppose the destination you have in mind for your customers is that they make a purchase. Your customer journey map would include touchpoints and milestones leading to that destination, such as \u201ccustomer engages with an online marketing campaign,\u201d \u201ccustomer interacts with a social media post,\u201d \u201ccustomer speaks with a sales representative,\u201d and \u201ccustomer places order.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of times companies go even deeper when mapping customer journeys. They might imagine a specific type of customer or potential customer, then delve into that person\u2019s unique needs, desires, and emotions each step of the way, calling attention to the touchpoints and milestones that will likely influence that individual\u2019s purchasing decisions one way or the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To best capture the customer journey, people will more often than not, map the customer journey in a cohesive visual.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, something called the <\/span><b>user journey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might go hand in hand with the customer journey. The user journey encompasses the steps a user takes on a company\u2019s website or app to accomplish a particular task. Say, for example, a hypothetical customer\u2019s end goal is to research a product or service on your website. In preparation for that customer, you\u2019d want to look at your site and map out how a user would go from the homepage to a product page, and how easy or intuitive that progression is for them. If it&#8217;s a difficult or fragmented user journey, prospective customers might become frustrated and give up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-is-a-customer-journey-map-important\"><strong>Why is a customer journey map important?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a good customer journey map, you can pinpoint how to best reach customers with key messages tailored to their needs and then gently guide them toward your product or service. But you wouldn\u2019t stop with just one customer; ideally, you\u2019d want to picture many different types of customers or personas, figuring out what makes each of them engage with your brand through each step of the customer journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-customer-journey-analytics\"><b>What are customer journey analytics?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collecting and analyzing customer journey data is an important step to better understanding your customers\u2019 decision-making processes and pain points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The information you gain can help identify the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customer journey analytics can tell you how many of your customers purchase on your website versus over the phone or in person.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How often customers select products or services and put them in their online shopping carts only to leave before clicking the \u201cbuy\u201d button.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common reasons why customers visit your support or FAQ page.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much time customers spend on your website on average before making a\u00a0 purchase.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote-style-one\"><p>&#8220;It\u2019s hard to sell to someone you don\u2019t understand&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also determine how many touchpoints it takes before the average customer purchases something and which touchpoints are the most effective. This could help you shore up your marketing and sales efforts in ways that will have the biggest impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to sell to someone you don\u2019t understand.
