What\u2019s our best asset <em>today<\/em>? That perspective is not so useful, however, when planning for where you want to be <em>tomorrow<\/em>. It\u2019s not about where you are, it\u2019s about where you\u2019re headed, and how fast you\u2019re getting there.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term thinking is hard for a very simple reason: every company is in a race against the clock. Whether you\u2019re bootstrapped or bankrolled, that clock is always ticking. Creating a product company requires an upfront investment of time and money and gives you a limited window to either break even or show enough evidence of growth to secure funding. It\u2019s hard to worry about future problems when you have a hardwired focus on hitting a short-term target.<\/p>\n<p>But think of it this way: which deserves more attention, a big wound that\u2019s healing, or a tiny tumor that\u2019s growing? It\u2019s not about where it is, it\u2019s about where it\u2019s going.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small\" src=\"https:\/\/intercom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Trajectory-hero.png\" alt=\"Following your trajectory\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a few ways this affects a business.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hiring-for-the-long-term\">Hiring for the long-term<\/h2>\n<p>When you\u2019re looking at candidates, it\u2019s imperative to evaluate not just where they are, but where they\u2019re going and how fast they\u2019re getting there. Who would you rather hire?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Candidate A:<\/strong> Nails every requirement for the role but hasn\u2019t shown any tendency to expand their skill set in any of their most recent roles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Candidate B:<\/strong> Falls short of your requirements today but has a track record of quickly expanding their skill set and improving in every previous role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Which of these two candidates is going to be a better teammate in six months or a year&#8217;s time? Our engineering team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/the-engineering-values-we-live-by\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hires for potential<\/a>, which is the embodiment of this idea.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"assessing-product-quality\">Assessing product quality<\/h2>\n<p>Obviously your customers only experience your product in its current state, which is why replies like \u201cit\u2019s coming\u201d or \u201cit\u2019ll be fixed soon\u201d frustrate them. Their problems exist today. But the state of the product today isn\u2019t the only thing you should concern yourself with.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote-style-two\"><p>&#8220;The trajectory of your product quality matters way more than where it is today&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For example, if you found out you had 80 customers facing issues today, you might be alarmed. But if I told you there were 160 a month ago, you\u2019d probably be optimistic. However, If I told you there were only 10 a month ago, you\u2019d realise you had a serious problem. The trajectory of your product quality matters way more than where it is today. Is it getting better or worse? How fast?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"analyzing-competitors\">Analyzing competitors<\/h2>\n<p>We believe it&#8217;s rarely useful to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/only-competitor-that-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stress about competitors<\/a>, but if you must analyze them, it\u2019s important to gauge their trajectory against yours, rather than their current state.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote-style-one\"><p>&#8220;What if they\u2019re growing five times faster than you today?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you have $5 million in revenue, and they only have $500,000, you\u2019ll be tempted to ignore them or belittle them. But what if they got to $500,000 five times faster than you? What if they\u2019re growing five times faster than you today?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s this lazy attitude that gives rise to the famous quote that\u2019s (mistakenly) attributed to Gandhi: \u201cFirst they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"whats-your-trajectory\">What\u2019s your trajectory?<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably seen some version of the <strong>1.01<sup>365<\/sup> = 38<\/strong> and <strong>0.99<sup>365<\/sup> = 0.02<\/strong> formulae that highlight the stark difference between a 1% daily increase and 1% daily decrease played out over a year.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a point particularly beloved by people selling diets and gym memberships, but it does highlight the power of small steps, how consistent small improvements lead to exponential growth. While it ignores the challenge of consistently finding areas to improve, it nicely illustrates the importance of trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>Inevitably, you&#8217;re always going to run into all sorts of new problems, big and small, in your company.
