Disable push notifications for a lost or stolen device

Stop Intercom push notifications being sent to a lost or stolen device directly from a contact's profile.

When a customer's phone is lost or stolen, Intercom push notifications keep going to that device. On Android, this is a security risk, anyone with access to the device can reply directly from the notification tray without opening the app.

Teammates can now disable push notifications for a specific device directly from a contact's profile, without needing physical access to the device. This is available on all plans.

Key benefits:

  • Stop push notifications reaching a lost or stolen device immediately

  • No need for the customer to have physical access to the device

  • View and manage all registered device tokens for a contact in one place

  • Available from both the Inbox sidebar and the Contacts page

How to disable push notifications for a device

From the Inbox sidebar

  1. Open a conversation with the contact in the Inbox

  2. Locate the customer's user data in the sidebar (this must be pinned to the sidebar)

  3. Click the ... next to their details.

  4. Select Manage push notifications.

  5. Find the device you want to disable and click Disable

From the Contacts page

  1. Go to Contacts and open the customer's profile.

  2. Click the 3 dots in their details section.

  3. Select Manage push notifications.

  4. Find the device you want to disable and click Disable.

Note: Disabling a device token stops push notifications being sent to that specific device. It does not affect the customer's other registered devices.

FAQs

Can I re-enable push notifications for a disabled device?

Push notifications to a disabled device will resume if the customer logs back into the app on that device, which generates a new device token.

What plans is this available on?

This feature is available on all Intercom plans.

What happened before this feature existed?

Previously, the only way to stop push notifications going to a device was calling Intercom.client().logout(), which requires physical access to the device. Teammates can now do this remotely from a contact's profile.
