The following article covers how to set up Google Tag Manager (GTM) to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) event routing for Intercom Messenger Events.

Pre-requisites:

  • GTM container (ID) has already been set up.

  • GTM is installed on your website.

Get started

Navigate to Google Tag Manager home and select the Container you’ve installed on your website, which will be used for event tracking and routing.

In the "Variables" tab, set up the following variables:

The Data Layer variable name should be the same as the variable name, for instance:

In the 'Triggers' tab, set up triggers for the Intercom events.

The event name should match the Name and should fire on all custom events, for instance:

In the 'Tags' tab, create a new tag, where the measurement ID and event name can be set.

Also set up event parameters using the variables created in the first step.

Within the triggers section in the tag created in the previous step, add all of the triggers that were created previously.

Click save.

The final result should look like this:

Intercom Messenger Events should now be routed to the measurement ID you configured in this step. You can use the ‘Preview’ function in GTM to confirm this, and then ‘Submit’ to set the changes live.
