As Fin becomes a bigger part of your customer support, managing changes becomes more complex. Content, guidance, procedures, and other configuration all work together, which means even small updates can have unexpected effects. Releases give you a structured way to manage those changes.
Releases let you safely prepare and deploy changes to your Fin configuration in a dedicated workspace. Instead of publishing edits directly to your live Fin configuration, you can add changes to a release.
With Releases, you can:
Bundle related changes into a single release.
Collaborate with teammates before changes go live.
Validate changes using Preview and Evals before deployment.
Deploy with confidence by publishing immediately or gradually rolling out changes with a phased rollout or A/B test against Main Fin.
Common use cases for Releases
Prepare for a product launch | If you're launching a new product or feature, you can prepare everything ahead of time in a single release. For example, you might update Help Center articles, add new guidance, create a procedure for the new feature, and adjust other parts of your Fin configuration. Once everything is ready, you can publish it all together or roll it out gradually first.
|
Improve how Fin answers customer questions | If you're reorganizing your content to help Fin provide better answers, you can group all of those changes into a release and compare the new configuration against your current live setup. This lets you measure whether the updated content improves answer quality before rolling it out more broadly. |
Move from answering questions to resolving them | You might currently rely on Help Center content to answer refund questions before handing customers off to your support team. With a release, you can introduce a new procedure that enables Fin to process refunds end-to-end, then roll it out gradually — using a phased rollout or A/B test — to compare the new procedure against your existing content-based experience before deploying it to everyone. |
How do I create a release?
A release holds the changes. You add items to it, edit them safely, and remove anything you no longer want live with Fin as part of that release. Nothing in a release touches Main Fin until you publish it or start a rollout.
Releases currently work with the Service agent only. To create a release:
Go to Fin AI Agent.
Select Service from the dropdown at the top of the navigation, then select Main Fin beneath it.
Click Create release.
Give the release a descriptive name that says what's changing, for example "Refund processing changes". The description is optional. The name and description are for your team only, to help you identify what's in the release, and Fin doesn't use them.
Once you create a release, you're working inside it. The app changes color and the release switcher at the top left shows the release's name, so you can tell you're not in Main Fin. Any change you save from here goes into the release, not Main Fin.
Now you can add changes to your release. For example, select Content to test a help article, Guidance or Escalation guidance to test behavioral rules, Procedures to test a multi-step flow, or Skills to test a skill.
Once you've added a change, it appears in your list of changes in the release. The release has Changes, Evals, and Results tabs, and each tab shows a count.
To see the exact changes made to an item, click the item and view its diff:
Note: Diffs can't currently be shown for very large changes. If an item has changed a lot, you'll see "The content is too large to show" instead.
How do I add, edit, or delete items in a release?
To add items to a release, open the release, click Add more changes, and choose the type of item. You can add, edit, and delete these item types in a release:
Content (public articles, internal articles, and snippets)
Guidance
Escalation guidance
Procedures
Skills
How do I create a new item in a release?
You can create a new item, such as a public article, directly inside a release. To create a new item in a release:
Open the release and click Add more changes.
Choose the type of item you want to add.
Write the content of the item.
Click Save to release.
A new item shows Publishes with the release instead of Published, and this status is locked. The item goes live only when you publish the release or start a rollout. Unlike an item that already exists in Main Fin, a new item's audience menu is open, so you can change the audience inside the release.
After you save a new item, a confirmation message appears with a View changes button.
How do I edit an existing item in a release?
When you open an item that already exists in Main Fin, the editor is locked by default. To edit an existing item in a release:
Open the release and click the item you want to edit.
Click Edit content at the top of the item.
Make your changes.
Click Save to release.
After you save an existing item to a release, a confirmation message appears with a View changes button.
Which settings are locked for an existing item in a release?
When an item already exists in Main Fin, its Published, Sales agent and Copilot availability, and Audience settings are locked inside a release, and a lock icon appears next to each one. An item that is already published on the Help Center can't be unpublished from a release. To unpublish an existing item or change its audience, switch to Main Fin and change it there. If the item is part of a release running a rollout or A/B test, Main Fin can't change it until that rollout or A/B test is stopped or the release is published.
Note: Some agents' availability can't be released. When an agent's toggle shows a lock icon, change its availability in Main Fin.
How do I save an edit from Main Fin to a release?
You can also save an edit to a release while you're working on an item in Main Fin. To save an edit from Main Fin to a release:
Open the item in Main Fin and make your changes.
Click the arrow next to Publish to Fin Main.
Under Save to release draft, select the release you want, or select New release draft to create one.
An item that is part of a release shows a release badge with a count next to its title. Click the badge to see which releases include the item and whether it was edited.
What do the change indicators in a release mean?
Each item in the release overview has an indicator showing the type of change:
New: The item didn't exist in your workspace before.
Deleted: The item will be deleted from your workspace.
+2 -2 (green and red numbers): The item already existed and has been edited. The numbers show how much was added and removed.
Disabled: The item has been turned off in the release.
Has conflicts: The item has changed in Main Fin since you added it to the release. To learn how to fix it, see How do I fix a conflict between a release and Main Fin?
How do I switch between a release and Main Fin?
To switch to a different release, use the switcher at the top left of the navigation. You can also create new releases from there, or switch to Main Fin, which is your live production version of Fin. The switcher lists each release with its number of changes and its status, such as Draft or a rollout percentage. It also has a search box, Manage releases, and New release.
To go back to Main Fin from a release:
Click the release switcher at the top left of the navigation. It shows the name of the release you're in.
Select Fin Main, which is labeled Live at the top of the list.
Once you're back in Main Fin, the app and your inboxes appear in grey, and any change you publish goes live straight away. When you're in a release, the app appears on a colored background instead.
How do I preview a release before it goes live?
Before anything reaches a live conversation, preview the release to see exactly how Fin behaves with your changes applied.
The preview runs Fin with your release's changes applied, so you see the real behavior customers would get.
Preview conversations don't touch Main Fin and aren't charged.
Use it to sanity-check every change before you publish or start a rollout.
You can preview in Chat or Voice, and choose who you're testing as.
Tip: Test the exact question a customer would ask to trigger your change, and confirm Fin responds the new way.
Note: Preview conversations appear in your live Inbox during testing. This is expected behavior, not a bug — they're real conversations Fin is responding to as part of the preview. They won't affect your reporting or billing.
How do I run Evals on a release?
Evals let you run a whole set of saved test conversations against your release and get an automatic pass or fail result for each one, so you can check a change hasn't broken Fin's behavior elsewhere before it reaches customers.
An Eval is a themed group of Simulations (realistic, multi-turn test conversations with criteria you define). When you run one against a release, every simulation runs with your release's changes applied instead of Main Fin. Nothing touches live conversations.
To learn more about how evals, simulations, and scoring work, see Fin Evals.
Run an eval on a release
Open the release you want to test.
Click the Evals tab. It lists the Evals changed in this release and the Evals from Main Fin.
Pick the eval you want to run. This can be an existing one you've built up as a regression suite, or a new one for this change (click Add more Evals to add it to the release).
Click the run button on the Eval's row. Every simulation in the eval runs against your release. For each one, you'll see a pass or fail result, the full transcript, the event log showing Fin's reasoning, and the outcome.
Review any failures, make further changes in the release, and run the eval again to confirm the fix.
Tip: Run evals before you publish a release or start a rollout. Preview is best for spot checking a specific question. Evals are best for confirming the release hasn't broken anything you've already tested.
What permissions do I need to work with releases?
To work with releases, a teammate needs the propose level or the publish level for each kind of change in the release. Permissions for Fin AI Agent & Automation, Knowledge content, and Help Center articles each have levels, and each level includes everything below it.
For releases, 2 levels matter:
Propose: Teammates can make changes in a draft release, but can't set them live.
Publish: Teammates can publish changes directly to Main Fin, either one at a time or in a release. This includes publishing to main, gradual rollouts, and A/B tests.
To set a release live, you need the publish level for every kind of change in it. For example, if a release includes guidance and a Help Center article, you need the publish level for both Fin AI Agent & Automation and Help Center articles.
This table shows the exact permission option for each level in each permission area:
Permission area | Propose level | Publish level |
Fin AI Agent & Automation | Can view configuration and propose changes in a draft release | Can view configuration and publish changes directly to main (individually or in a release) |
Knowledge content | Can view content and propose changes in a draft release | Can view content and publish changes directly to main (individually or in a release) |
Help Center articles | Can view help center articles and propose changes in a draft release | Can view help center articles and publish changes directly to main (individually or in a release) |
What do Fin AI Agent & Automation permissions include?
The Fin AI Agent & Automation permission covers all automations configuration:
Workflows
Basic automations
It also covers all Fin AI Agent configuration:
Guidance
Escalation
Procedures
Fin data access
Custom answers
Evals
Agent role specific settings
Fin voice specific settings
General Fin settings
Note: The Fin AI Agent & Automation permission doesn't include Fin's access to content. The Knowledge permission manages that.
What do Knowledge content permissions include?
Knowledge content permissions cover snippets, internal articles, and web syncs.
What do Help Center articles permissions include?
Help Center articles permissions cover viewing, proposing, and publishing Help Center articles. The permission card also has a separate option, Can manage saved views for Help Center articles.
A teammate who can only view configuration or content can open Fin settings, simulations, and evals, but can't change them.
Note: Existing teammates keep their current access, shown as the matching new level. The propose level is new for Fin and Knowledge content, so nobody gets it automatically. An admin needs to assign it to each teammate who needs it. To learn more, see Teammate permissions: how to control workspace access.
How do I fix a conflict between a release and Main Fin?
If an item in your release is changed in Main Fin after you added it, the release detects a conflict. This can happen with any item type. For example, a teammate might publish an update to the same guidance directly in Main Fin, or publish another release that edits it.
While there's a conflict, you can't publish the release or start a rollout until you fix it.
To fix a conflict:
Open the release and find the item marked with a conflict.
Remove the item from the release (unstage it).
Add the item back to the release. It now starts from the latest version in Main Fin.
Reapply your changes to the item.
Note: There isn't a way to resolve conflicts automatically yet, so you'll need to reapply your changes manually. Built-in conflict resolution is coming soon.
How do I publish or roll out a release?
When your changes preview well, you decide how they reach customers. Open the release and choose how to ship it:
Publish to Fin Main: Publish your changes to Main Fin straight away, for all conversations.
Roll out gradually: Release your changes to a percentage of conversations or a specific audience, then increase it when you're confident.
A/B test: Split conversations between your release and Main Fin, and measure whether your changes made a significant difference.
To learn more about publishing, rolling out gradually, and A/B testing a release, see How to roll out a release in Fin.
How do I end a rollout or roll back a release?
You can end a rollout at any time, or roll back items from a published release using each item's version history. To learn how, see How to roll out a release in Fin.

What is Main Fin?
What is Main Fin?
Main Fin (also shown as Fin Main in some places) is your live production version of Fin. Changes in a release don't affect Main Fin until you publish the release or start a rollout.
What do Publish to Fin Main, Save to Fin Main and Save to release draft mean?
What do Publish to Fin Main, Save to Fin Main and Save to release draft mean?
Publish to Fin Main saves your edit to Fin Main, and it goes live straight away. If the item isn't published on your Help Center and is off for every Fin agent, the button reads Save to Fin Main: your edit is saved, but nothing goes live until you publish the item or turn on an agent in Fin availability. Save to release draft, in the arrow menu next to the button, saves your edit to a release instead; none of these buttons publishes a release.
How do I know if I'm working in a release or in Main Fin?
How do I know if I'm working in a release or in Main Fin?
You can tell whether you're working in a release or in Main Fin by checking the release switcher at the top left of the navigation. It shows the name of the release you're in, or Main Fin. When you're in a release, the app also changes to that release's color. In Main Fin, the app and your inboxes appear in grey, so a grey screen means you're working in Main Fin.
This matters because changes save to wherever you're working. If you're in a release, your changes are saved to that release and won't reach customers until it's published or rolled out. If you're in Main Fin, published changes go live straight away.
To check whether an item is already part of a release, open its list page in Main Fin, for example the content list in Knowledge, and look at the Releases column.
What can I add, edit, or delete inside a release?
What can I add, edit, or delete inside a release?
You can add, edit, and delete content, guidance, escalation guidance, procedures, and skills inside a release. Support for more item types, including attributes and data connectors, is coming soon.
What happens if two releases modify the same item?
What happens if two releases modify the same item?
When two releases modify the same item, their changes aren't combined. When you publish one release, any other release that includes the same item shows a conflict. You'll need to fix the conflict before you can publish the second release or start a rollout. To learn more, see How do I fix a conflict between a release and Main Fin?
Can I save changes mid-edit inside a release?
Can I save changes mid-edit inside a release?
Changes you make inside a release aren't saved automatically in the release editor. If you refresh the page or navigate away before saving, you'll lose any unsaved edits, so save often as you work.
