Introducing Fin 4: Customer Agent, Operator, and major upgrades to the Intercom helpdesk
At Pioneer 2026, we announced Fin 4, a major step toward a fully agentic customer experience.

At Pioneer 2026, our Chief Product Officer Paul Adams announced Fin 4, a big step toward our mission of delivering perfect customer experiences to every customer, every time.

Fin 4 brings major upgrades to every part of the Fin system, including next-generation capabilities for the Intercom helpdesk.
Here’s what’s new across the system:
- Customer Agent: We believe every business will have one Customer Agent. Ours just got a big upgrade. Fin now drives customer success and, with Skills, figures out how to solve problems without you defining every step.
- Operator: Fully agentic customer experiences need an Agent to run complex operations. Routines and Connections give Operator powerful new ways to do that work for you, proactively and autonomously.
- Copilot and Human in the Loop (HITL): As Fin resolves more, human teams take on a supervisory role. A second-generation Copilot and Human in the Loop give them entirely new ways to work together.
- Fin Apex: The next generation of Fin’s AI models is here. Apex 2.0 and Apex Flash 2.0 push performance further across resolution rate, speed, and accuracy. Apex for Procedures extends Fin’s specialized model approach to complex, multi-step queries.
Why we built this
We’ve seen a big acceleration in Agent capability in 2026. They’re becoming:
- More autonomous: They’re working behind the scenes when our attention is elsewhere, and when we come back to them, they’ve done epic work for us.
- More proactive: They do things for us before they’re asked to, looking for signals and going ahead based on goals or triggers we gave them in the past.
- More directive: Increasingly, Agents know more than we do and are directing us on what we should do.
With these advancements, we can now see a very clear path to a fully agentic customer experience where 90–95% of customer communication will not involve a human – for every business, no matter how big.
We believe that this is a matter of when, not if. And the biggest barrier to this future will be organizational, not technological.
This is what we think the future looks like:
- Customers will talk to a Customer Agent, which works across the full customer lifecycle. That Customer Agent will fully understand the business goals and the customer context, and will resolve all their problems excellently. It will manage 90%+ of inbound conversations, and will also act proactively to achieve business goals and help customers who might be stuck.
- Managing the Customer Agent manually will be hard, so businesses will have an Operations Agent. Rather than people trying to manage the Customer Agent manually, businesses will have an Operations Agent to do that work. Human teams will manage the Operations Agent and design the customer experience, and the Operations Agent will manage and optimize the Customer Agent.
- We need a reimagined helpdesk to work alongside the Customer Agent and the Operations Agent. The helpdesk solutions we have been using for the past decade, based on cases or tickets, are no longer fit for purpose. Support teams need a completely reimagined helpdesk that is built for AI.
This is what our latest product announcements are all about.

Let’s take a deeper look at the latest updates to the Intercom helpdesk.
What’s new with the Intercom helpdesk
In a world where 90% and more of customer questions are being resolved by a Customer Agent, the role of the human support team evolves. And they need next-generation helpdesk capabilities designed for that world.
We’ve made updates to the Intercom helpdesk with Human in the Loop and Copilot.
Human in the Loop
When a conversation needs a review, piece of information, or an approval, Fin will loop in a human to approve, edit, or take over. This changes the role of a support rep from answering customer questions to supervising Fin – which is an important signal for the future.

Copilot
We’ve rethought, redesigned, and rebuilt Copilot as an Agent that proactively prepares the work when a teammate needs to reply directly to the customer. The second generation of Copilot is now more autonomous and proactive. Every time a rep opens a conversation, Copilot has already searched all the connected tools, summarized the customer issue, drafted the best answer, and recommended the actions to take.

Both Copilot and Human in the Loop work natively inside Intercom, but will also integrate with other helpdesks.
These are the first set of changes on our path to giving you a next-gen helpdesk, designed for a world of 90% Agent resolution.
Building for the future
We are in a period of accelerating technology. AI is very powerful, and it’s important to keep up and understand what it can do.
We believe the future is one where:
- Every business has a single Customer Agent, and that Agent manages 90% and more of all inbound customer communication – traversing seamlessly across the customer journey.
- The Customer Agent is managed and optimized by Operator, and the human team’s job is to set the strategy and design the customer experience.
- Agents and humans will collaborate deeply in a next-generation helpdesk. At times, Agents will tell humans what to do, and in others, humans will act as supervisors for Agents.
Fin 4 is a huge step toward that future, and to achieving our mission of helping businesses deliver perfect customer experiences.
