DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) is a widely accepted email authentication policy and reporting protocol. If you set the DMARC policy to “reject,” it helps protect your domain from unauthorized use like spoofing or phishing by ensuring that only legitimate senders can send emails on your behalf.
The Intercom and Valimail integration helps you easily monitor your DMARC statistics on emails sent from domains added to Intercom.
What is DMARC reporting and why it matters?
When DMARC reporting is active, receiving mail servers (like Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) generate aggregate DMARC reports that show how your domain’s emails perform against SPF and DKIM checks.
Monitoring your DMARC reports provides essential visibility into your email sending activity and helps you:
Identify which services are sending on behalf of your domain.
Track compliance with email authentication protocols (SPF and DKIM).
View authentication results (SPF and DKIM pass/fail) in a visual dashboard.
Detect unauthorized senders attempting to spoof your domain (phishing and spoofing attempts).
Ultimately increase your email deliverability rates by assuring receiving mail systems your emails are legitimate.
Track your progress as you strengthen your DMARC policy towards enforcement (a policy of quarantine or reject).
Note: DMARC reports do not include personally identifiable information (PII).
How the Valimail integration works
Valimail is Intercom’s preferred third-party partner for DMARC reporting and email authentication. They are experts who help organizations interpret complex, XML-based DMARC data, turning it into actionable insights.
The Intercom integration lets you automatically set up a free Valimail Monitor account during the email domain authentication flow. This gives you a global view of the traffic sent on your behalf and helps you confidently progress toward full DMARC enforcement. Start with a free Valimail Monitor account to get a global view of the traffic being sent on your behalf, as well as what email is passing or failing DMARC, SPF and DKIM.
With a FREE Monitor account, you can
Help identify who’s sending emails using your domain (including third-party services)
View authentication results (SPF and DKIM pass/fail) in a visual dashboard
Detect unauthorised senders attempting to spoof your domain
Track your progress as you strengthen your DMARC policy towards enforcement (a policy of quarantine or reject)
Identify configuration issues that could impact your email deliverability
Intercom has partnered with Valimail to make Monitor available to all its customers.
Set up DMARC reporting
The Valimail integration is accessible during the email domain authentication flow on the email settings page.
Navigate to your email settings in Intercom and start the domain authentication flow for an added email.
On the Authenticate your domain page, you'll see the recommended Setup DMARC reporting section.
Toggle the DMARC reporting switch On.
Click either Authenticate automatically or Authenticate manually.
Automatic Account Creation
When the toggle is On and you proceed with authentication:
Intercom will attempt to create an account with Valimail.
The domain you are authenticating will be added to the newly created Valimail account.
The admin will be added as a user.
You will receive an email from Valimail guiding you through the rest of the setup for your Valimail account.
You can manage your Valimail domains and users directly from the Valimail website.
Known Limitations
One Valimail User Per Teammate: Due to a limitation with how Valimail handles user accounts, we can only have one Valimail user per teammate/email.
Authenticating a Second Domain: If you have already created a Valimail account and try to authenticate a second domain, no new account, user, or domain is created on Valimail's side.
Pre-existing DMARC Records: The DMARC reporting toggle will not appear for domains that already have a DMARC record.
Important: If a Valimail account already exists for the teammate, you will see an info box. You must manually add this new domain to your existing Valimail account. The rua attribute will still be added to the generated DMARC records if the toggle is On.
