Note:
Intercom reserves the right to update rates, countries, phone number types, and usage types at any time. Intercom will provide a minimum of 30 days' notice before any rate change takes effect.
Existing customers move to the rates in this article from December 1, 2026. New customers may be on these rates from their order date. If you're on a contracted or legacy pricing plan and aren't sure which pricing applies to your workspace, contact your account representative.
What are WhatsApp message categories?
WhatsApp messages sent through Intercom are charged per message, at a rate that depends on the message's category and the recipient's country code. There are currently four message categories, determined by Meta (WhatsApp's parent company) based on the content and purpose of each message:
Utility — facilitates a specific, agreed-upon request or transaction, or updates a customer about an ongoing transaction, including post-purchase notifications and recurring billing statements.
Authentication — enables businesses to authenticate users with one-time passcodes, potentially at multiple steps in the login process (for example, account verification, account recovery, or integrity challenges).
Marketing — includes promotions or offers, informational updates, or invitations for customers to respond or take action. Any message that doesn't qualify as utility or authentication is a marketing message.
Service — helps you resolve customer inquiries. Service messages are free-form messages, sent by a teammate or Fin, within a 24-hour customer service window.
All rates in this article are in US cents per message sent. You aren't charged for inbound WhatsApp messages sent to you by your customers.
How does the WhatsApp customer service window work?
When a customer sends you a WhatsApp message, a 24-hour timer called the customer service window starts. Within those 24 hours, you can send the customer any type of message. Every message delivered during this window — marketing, authentication, utility templates, and free-form service messages — is charged at the rate for its category, based on the recipient's country code. Service messages delivered within Meta’s free tier of 1,000 service messages per business phone number per calendar month (see below).
What is the monthly free tier for service messages?
Meta provides a free tier of 1,000 delivered service messages per calendar month. Each business phone number has one shared free tier of 1,000 service messages per calendar month — the tier resets at the start of each calendar month, and unused service messages don’t roll over.
How do WhatsApp message charges apply?
The delivery of each message to a customer results in one charge, based on that message's category. A template is a pre-approved message format required for marketing, utility, and authentication messages. For example, sending two marketing template messages and two utility template messages to the same customer results in four separate charges: 2 marketing and 2 utility. Important: Rates, countries, phone number types, and usage types are subject to change at any time. Intercom will provide a minimum of 30 days' notice before any rate change takes effect.
