Use this article to set up Fin's four pre-built Shopify data connector templates — so Fin can quote refunds, issue store credit, and check or revoke gift cards during a support conversation, without a teammate stepping in.
Data connectors let Fin call external APIs (application programming interfaces) mid-conversation to fetch or update live data. The Shopify templates are pre-configured connectors that call the Shopify Admin REST API on your behalf. API scopes are the specific permissions your Shopify store must grant before a connector can read or write that data.
What each Shopify compensation template does
The four Shopify data connector templates for Fin are listed below — each covers a different part of the compensation workflow.
Calculate Shopify Refund
Quotes a refund — including refundable shipping, tax, and the maximum refundable per payment transaction — without moving any money. This is a dry-run action: it calculates what a refund would be before anything is issued. Pair it with the Create Shopify Refund action when you want Fin to confirm the amount with the customer before processing. Does not write to Shopify.
Issue Shopify Gift Card
Issues store credit as a Shopify gift card. Shopify emails the code directly to the customer — the redeemable code is never returned to Fin or visible in the conversation. Fin only sees the card's ID, balance, currency, expiry, and last 4 characters. This template writes to Shopify.
Get Shopify Gift Card Balance
Checks the remaining balance, initial value, and expiry date on a customer's Shopify gift card. Use this when a customer asks how much credit they have left or whether a card has been used. Does not write to Shopify.
Disable Shopify Gift Card
Revokes a gift card that was mis-issued — for example, sent for the wrong amount, to the wrong customer, or issued in error. The card stops working immediately.
Important: This action cannot be undone — Shopify has no way to re-enable a disabled gift card. If a card is revoked by mistake, issue a replacement using the Issue Shopify Gift Card template.
How to add a template
Find the template you want to add under the Shopify section.
Connect (or reuse) your Shopify store connection — the action's URL automatically targets the store your workspace has connected to. No per-action domain configuration is needed.
Review the pre-filled parameters, description, and Fin usage guidance. Click Set live to activate the template. You'll see the connector listed as active under Settings > Integrations > Data connectors.
Note: Each template is enabled per workspace. Once live, test the connector in a real conversation — Fin's preview mode does not make live data connector calls.
Shopify permissions required
Before adding the gift card templates, your Shopify store must have the read_gift_cards and write_gift_cards scopes. Shopify doesn't grant these by default — a merchant admin must request them from Shopify Support.
Important: All three gift card templates (Issue Shopify Gift Card, Get Shopify Gift Card Balance, Disable Shopify Gift Card) will return an authorization error until these scopes are granted. This is the most likely cause of a first-run failure. Once Shopify Support has granted the scopes, return to Settings > Integrations > Data connectors to add or re-test your gift card templates — no reinstallation of the Shopify app is needed.
The Calculate Shopify Refund template has a separate requirement: it needs the orders or marketplace_orders scope, which Shopify grants by default.
Known limitations
The following limitations apply to the four Shopify data connector templates for Fin. Each limitation names the affected template or templates.
Calculate Shopify Refund — order-level and shipping-level quotes only. Per-line-item quoting isn't supported by this template. The currency parameter must also match the order's currency exactly, or Shopify rejects the request.
Disable Shopify Gift Card — this action is irreversible. Shopify has no re-enable API endpoint (the ability to restore a disabled card). If a card is revoked by mistake, issue a replacement using the Issue Shopify Gift Card template.
Issue Shopify Gift Card — the gift card code is never visible in the conversation. When Fin uses this template, Shopify emails the code directly to the customer. If a customer says they didn't receive it, check the customer record's email address in Shopify Admin and Shopify's own notification log.
All four templates — response fields are limited to what's listed in each template's configuration. Only the response attributes explicitly listed in a template are readable by Fin — any other Shopify fields are redacted and unavailable.
