Intercom Pricing: Plans, Features, and What You'll Actually Pay

Insights from Fin Team•
Intercom Pricing - title image

Intercom pricing has two layers: seat-based plans for your human team, and outcome-based pricing for Fin, the AI agent. The seat price you see on the pricing page is real, but it is not the whole story. Your total cost depends on how many agents you have, how many conversations Fin resolves, which channels you use, and which add-ons you turn on.

This guide breaks down every component so you can estimate what you will actually pay.

Key Takeaways:

  • Intercom offers three plans: Essential ($29/seat/month), Advanced ($85/seat/month), and Expert ($132/seat/month), all billed annually.
  • Fin AI Agent costs $0.99 per outcome on every plan. You only pay when Fin delivers a successful result.
  • Fin works on any helpdesk (Salesforce, Freshdesk, HubSpot, and more) at $0.99/outcome with no seat costs and no platform fee.
  • Add-ons like Copilot, Pro ($99/month), Proactive Support Plus ($99/month), and usage-based channels (SMS, WhatsApp, phone) affect your total bill.
  • A 14-day free trial is available with no credit card required.

How Intercom Pricing Works

Intercom combines a per-seat subscription with usage-based AI pricing. The subscription covers the helpdesk: inbox, ticketing, workflows, help center, and reporting. The usage-based component covers Fin, the AI agent that resolves customer conversations without human involvement.

This two-layer model means your bill scales with both team size and AI usage. For teams that deploy Fin heavily, the outcome charges often exceed the seat costs. For teams that rely mostly on human agents, the seat cost is the primary expense.

Intercom Plans: Essential, Advanced, and Expert

All three plans include access to Fin AI Agent, the Intercom Messenger, a shared inbox, ticketing, a public help center, pre-built reporting, simple automations, and Slack integration. The differences are in automation depth, team management features, and security capabilities.

Essential: $29/seat/month (annual) or $39/seat/month (monthly)

The starting point. You get Fin AI Agent, the Messenger, a shared inbox, the ticketing system, pre-built reports, a public help center, simple automations, and Slack integration.

What you do not get: the Workflows builder, multiple team inboxes, round-robin assignment, a private help center, custom reports, or Salesforce and Marketo integrations. If your team needs automated routing or assignment rules, you will need Advanced.

Best for: Individuals, startups, and small businesses that need core support tools without complexity.

Advanced: $85/seat/month (annual) or $99/seat/month (monthly)

Adds the Workflows builder, round-robin assignment, multiple team inboxes, a private help center, multilingual help center, tickets portal, custom reports, Salesforce integration, Marketo integration, and Lite seats (20 included) for colleagues who need limited access to support cross-functional collaboration.

This is the plan most growing support teams land on. The Workflows builder alone justifies the jump for teams that need automated routing, SLA rules, or conditional logic in their support operations.

Best for: Growing support teams that want stronger automation, deeper reporting, and more ways to collaborate.

Expert: $132/seat/month (annual) or $139/seat/month (monthly)

Adds SSO and identity management, HIPAA support, SLA management, workload management, a multibrand Messenger, multibrand help center, team office hours, team reply time settings, extended API limits, a real-time dashboard, and 50 Lite seats.

Best for: Large teams that need advanced security controls, multibrand support, and powerful workflow and workload management features.

Fin AI Agent Pricing: $0.99 Per Outcome

Fin is included on every Intercom plan. Usage is billed separately at $0.99 per outcome.

An outcome is counted when Fin successfully delivers value in a conversation. You are charged a maximum of one outcome per conversation, regardless of how many questions the customer asks or how many steps Fin takes.

What Counts as a Billable Outcome

  • Resolution ($0.99): Fin answers the customer's question and the customer either confirms it helped or leaves without requesting more help.
  • Procedure handoff ($0.99): Fin completes a Procedure you configured (like processing a refund or updating an account) that ends in a handoff to a human or workflow.
  • Disqualification ($0.99): In a sales context, Fin determines a prospect does not meet your qualification criteria and disqualifies them.
  • Qualification ($9.99): In a sales context, Fin matches a prospect to your qualification criteria and routes them to your sales team.

What You Are Not Charged For

  • Conversations where the customer asks to speak with a human agent.
  • Conversations where Fin cannot answer and escalates.
  • Conversations where Fin detects frustration and escalates (this is Fin's default behavior).
  • Conversations where a Procedure fails to complete.
  • Abandoned conversations where Fin's last message was a question (not an answer).

If a customer returns to a previously resolved conversation and asks for more help, the original resolution is deducted and you are not charged for it.

Controlling Your Fin Spend

You can set a monthly outcome limit to control costs. Usage alerts notify you at custom thresholds (such as 80% or 90% of your target), and hard limits pause Fin when a ceiling is reached, routing conversations to your human team instead. Real-time reporting shows exactly how many outcomes Fin has delivered in the current billing period.

These controls exist specifically to prevent bill surprises. You decide the ceiling; Fin operates within it.

Fin With Your Current Helpdesk: $0.99/Outcome, No Seat Costs

Fin does not require Intercom's helpdesk. It works as a standalone AI agent on top of your existing platform.

Supported helpdesks include Salesforce, Freshdesk, Freshchat, HubSpot, and others. Setup is quick and requires no integration, setup, or platform fees.

The pricing:

  • $0.99 per outcome (same rate as Fin on Intercom).
  • No seat costs. Unlimited teammates at no charge.
  • No platform fee, no setup fee, no integration fee.
  • Minimum commitments apply.

This deployment model is designed for teams that are happy with their current helpdesk but want a higher-performing AI agent. Fin handles the AI resolution layer; your helpdesk handles human agent workflows, ticketing, and reporting.

Features include quick setup with your current helpdesk, answers over email and live chat, customizable tone and answer length, the ability to take actions on external systems, and seamless handoff to agents in your existing helpdesk.

You can also add Copilot (an AI assistant for your human agents) to any Fin integration for $35/user/month.

Important: Fin for Sales and Fin for Ecommerce are not currently available with Fin on other platforms. You need to be on an Intercom plan (Essential, Advanced, or Expert) to access those roles.

Fin Voice: To use Fin Voice with your existing helpdesk, contact the sales team for pricing details.

Add-Ons That Affect Your Total Cost

Beyond seats and Fin outcomes, several add-ons and usage-based charges can increase your monthly bill. Add-ons are included in your free trial and can be added or removed anytime.

Pro: $99/month

The Pro add-on enables you to see and continuously improve 100% of your customer conversations, so you can scale Fin with confidence. It includes CX Score, AI Topics, Trends, AI Recommendations, Monitors, and Custom AI Scorecards. Pro also includes Operator, an AI agent for your customer operations that manages knowledge, builds automation, and analyzes performance.

Copilot

An AI assistant embedded in the inbox that helps human agents find answers, draft replies, troubleshoot issues, and translate messages in real time. Copilot is separate from Fin. Fin resolves conversations autonomously on the customer side; Copilot assists your human agents on their side.

All full-seat teammates get access to Copilot with usage included for up to 10 conversations per month. For unlimited usage, purchase the Copilot add-on at $35/user/month on any plan.

Copilot is available for Intercom and Salesforce.

Proactive Support Plus: $99/month

Unlocks advanced outbound capabilities including Product Tours, Surveys, In-app Posts, Mobile Push, and Mobile Carousels. The $99 monthly fee includes 500 messages sent each month. If you exceed 500 messages, additional usage-based charges apply. Available on any plan.

Usage-Based Channels

SMS, WhatsApp, and phone support are billed based on usage (per message or per minute), separate from your plan.

  • WhatsApp is charged per conversation, with unit costs varying by volume and direction (inbound vs. outbound).
  • SMS is charged per message sent and received, with costs varying by volume and region.
  • Email campaigns sent from outbound (bulk emails) are charged per email sent. Emails sent from the inbox, inbound emails from customers, and responses to those emails are included in your plan at no additional charge.

Every plan has access to these channels. You only pay for what you use.

Fin Voice

Fin Voice (AI-powered phone support) pricing is available by contacting the sales team.

Services

Optional paid service add-ons:

  • Premier Support: Faster response times, convenient escalation paths, and access to the Premier Support team 24/7.
  • Premier Support Rapid Response: The fastest response times available, plus 24/7 escalation and Premier Support team access.

Contact the sales team for details on service add-ons.

Real Cost Examples

Plan-level pricing is useful for comparison, but real budgets need worked examples. Here are three scenarios using annual billing.

Small Team (3 agents, 500 Fin resolutions/month)

ComponentMonthly Cost
3 Essential seats ($29 each)$87
500 Fin outcomes ($0.99 each)$495
Total$582/month (~$6,984/year)

Fin outcomes are already the larger line item at this volume. The AI agent costs roughly 5.7x what a single seat costs.

Mid-Size Team (10 agents, 2,000 Fin resolutions/month)

ComponentMonthly Cost
10 Advanced seats ($85 each)$850
2,000 Fin outcomes ($0.99 each)$1,980
Copilot unlimited for 10 agents ($35 each)$350
Total$3,180/month (~$38,160/year)

At this scale, Fin outcomes account for 62% of the bill. Adding unlimited Copilot for the full team adds another $4,200/year. Without the Copilot add-on, each agent still gets 10 Copilot conversations per month included.

Growing Team on Fin With Existing Helpdesk (0 Intercom seats, 5,000 Fin resolutions/month)

ComponentMonthly Cost
Fin outcomes ($0.99 × 5,000)$4,950
Total$4,950/month (~$59,400/year)

No seat costs, no platform fee. The entire bill is outcome-based. This model works for teams that want the AI layer without switching their helpdesk.

Why Outcome-Based Pricing

Fin uses outcome-based pricing because it ties your cost directly to value delivered. You pay $0.99 when Fin successfully resolves a customer's issue or executes a configured Procedure. You pay nothing when Fin cannot help.

This model is different from per-conversation pricing (where you pay even when the AI fails and escalates to a human) and per-session pricing (where multiple sessions for the same issue multiply your cost).

The practical difference: at a 76% resolution rate (Fin's current average across 8,000+ customers), a per-conversation model would charge you for the 24% of conversations that did not resolve. Outcome-based pricing does not.

Fin also backs its performance with the Million Dollar Guarantee: new customers who are not satisfied within 90 days receive a full refund of their Fin spend, up to $1,000,000. For high-volume enterprise prospects, Fin guarantees a resolution rate exceeding 65%, backed by $1,000,000 in cash or credits if the target is not met.

How Fin Compares on Price

Pricing models vary across AI customer service agents. Here is how the published rates compare:

VendorPricing ModelPublished RateNotes
FinPer outcome$0.99/outcomeOnly charged for successful resolutions and configured handoffs
Zendesk AIPer verified resolution~$1.20–$1.50/resolutionRate varies by commitment level
Salesforce AgentforcePer conversation$2.00/conversationCharges for every conversation including escalations
Freshdesk Freddy AIPer session$0.10/sessionMultiple sessions per issue multiply cost
AdaPer conversationCustom (est. $1–$3.50)No public pricing; enterprise contracts from ~$30K/year
DecagonPlatform + usageCustom (est. $50K platform + per-conversation)No public pricing; median contract ~$386K/year
GorgiasTicket tiers + AI fee$0.50–$1.00/AI resolutionBase ticket fee + separate AI charge + overages

The pricing model matters more than the sticker price. A $0.10/session fee sounds cheap until you need three sessions to resolve one issue. A $2.00/conversation fee charges you for failures. Normalize every comparison to cost per resolved conversation to make an accurate assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Intercom cost per month?

It depends on your plan, team size, and Fin usage. A solo founder on Essential with 200 Fin resolutions/month pays approximately $227/month. A 10-person team on Advanced with 2,000 resolutions and unlimited Copilot pays approximately $3,180/month. Use the pricing calculator to estimate your specific scenario.

Is Fin AI Agent included in all plans?

Yes. Fin is available on Essential, Advanced, and Expert. You are only billed for Fin outcomes if you deploy it. If you do not use Fin, you pay only the seat cost.

What is the cheapest way to use Intercom?

If you are an eligible startup, the Early Stage program starts at $33/month in year one with 300 free Fin outcomes per month. If you do not qualify, the Essential plan starts at $29/seat/month on annual billing. For teams that already have a helpdesk, Fin with your existing helpdesk has no seat costs and no platform fee. You pay $0.99 per outcome with minimum commitments.

Can I set a spending limit on Fin?

Yes. You can set a monthly outcome limit. When the limit is reached, Fin stops resolving and routes conversations to your human team. Your bill never exceeds the ceiling you set.

Does Intercom charge per conversation or per resolution?

Per outcome (resolution). You are not charged for conversations where Fin could not resolve the issue, where the customer requested a human, where Fin detected frustration and escalated, or where Fin's last message was a clarifying question that went unanswered. One charge maximum per conversation, regardless of complexity.

What happens after the free trial?

After 14 days, you will no longer be able to use Intercom until you start a paid subscription. If you signed up on your own, choose your plan and add a payment method. If your trial was set up by the sales team, contact your Account Manager to start a paid subscription. Sales-led trials do not automatically convert when you add payment details.

How does Intercom pricing compare to Zendesk?

Intercom's seat pricing ($29–$132/seat/month) is broadly comparable to Zendesk Suite ($55–$115/agent/month). The key difference is in AI pricing: Fin charges $0.99 per successful outcome; Zendesk AI charges approximately $1.20–$1.50 per verified resolution. Fin also works as a standalone agent on Zendesk itself, so teams can add Fin's AI without switching helpdesks.

Is there a free plan?

No. Intercom does not offer a permanent free plan. The 14-day free trial is the evaluation option, and the Early Stage program is available for eligible startups.

Can I create a customized package?

You can choose your core plan, your number of seats, and whether you want add-ons. You can also choose whether to use Fin, Email, WhatsApp, Phone, and SMS. You cannot add features from one plan to another or remove features from a plan. The Early Stage program is a fixed package and is not customizable.

Do I need a contract?

No. All plans offer yearly subscriptions, and you can also choose to pay monthly on Essential and Advanced. If you prefer a contract, that can be arranged with the sales team. Customers on contracts are assigned an Account Manager to handle subscription changes.

What payment methods are accepted?

Intercom accepts all major credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Stripe Link. ACH and wire transfers are available only for customers on a contracted subscription. Intercom bills in USD only.
