How Operator credits work with the Pro add-on

Learn how Operator credits work, what's included with Pro, how to set usage limits and alerts, and how to manage teammate access.

Written by Dawn

Operator is included with your Pro add-on and comes with 2,000 free credits each month. Credits measure everything Operator does, including analyzing data, debugging Fin, authoring procedures, and improving your content. If you use more than your monthly inclusion, additional usage is charged at $0.01 per credit.

What's included

  • Operator is included with your Pro add-on — not as unlimited access, but with 2,000 free credits per month.

  • Usage above your free credit inclusion is charged at $0.01 per credit.

  • Credits apply to Operator only and can't be used for other Intercom products.

Note: To use Operator, you need an active Pro add-on. If you're on a legacy plan, contact your account team or go to Settings > Subscription > Billing to upgrade with the Pro add-on.

Your monthly credit inclusion

  • You get 2,000 free Operator credits per month, regardless of conversation volume.

  • Usage above 2,000 credits per month is charged on a pay-as-you-go basis at $0.01 per credit.

Note: During a Pro trial, you have unlimited access to Operator. If your trial ends without converting to a paid Pro add-on, you'll lose Operator access.

Viewing and managing your credits

Viewing your usage

To view your Operator credit usage, go to Settings > Subscription > Usage > Credits.

The Credits tab in Settings > Subscription > Usage, showing credit usage for the current billing period.

Click Set usage alerts and limits to open the Credits tab. From here you can set alerts and credit limits.

The usage bar shows credits used this billing period, prepaid usage remaining, and your current limit.

The teammate breakdown shows each teammate's chats, credits used, and Operator access status.

Alerts and limits

Set an alert

Alerts send email notifications to your billing contacts when usage hits 50%, 80%, and 100% of your set amount.

The Set usage alerts and limits panel with the Credits tab open, showing the Alerts checkbox and credit threshold field.
  1. Click Set usage alerts and limits.

  2. Open the Credits tab.

  3. Check the Alerts box and enter a credit threshold.

  4. Click Save — billing contacts are notified by email when usage hits 50%, 80%, and 100% of this amount.

Tip: Use alerts to get notified before you reach your limit — Operator keeps running. Use a limit for hard spend control — Operator stops automatically when the limit is reached. You can set both.

Set a workspace limit

Limits set a spending cap on credits — independent of how many credits are actually available in your pool. When the limit is reached, Operator turns off immediately, even if your workspace still has credits remaining. You'll see an "Operator is turned off" message in-product. To resume:

  1. Click Set usage alerts and limits.

  2. Open the Credits tab.

  3. Check the Limit box and enter a maximum credit amount.

  4. Click Save changes.

  5. A Confirm limits dialog appears, warning that once the limit is hit, Operator will be disabled for all teammates. Click Confirm changes to apply — Operator turns off automatically when this limit is reached.

Note: Your default credit limit is set to your free inclusion amount — remove or increase it to allow pay-as-you-go usage at $0.01 per credit. Changes to alerts and limits take effect within the next hour.

Set a teammate limit

You can set an Operator credit limit for individual teammates, giving you finer control over your Operator spend. A teammate's limit caps how many credits they can consume in the billing period. Once reached, Operator stops for that teammate while the rest of the workspace continues unaffected.

  1. Go to Settings > Subscription > Usage.

  2. Click Set usage alerts and limits.

  3. Open the Credits tab and scroll to the "Usage by teammate" section.

  4. Tick Can use Operator for the teammate and enter a credit limit amount if needed.

  5. Click Save.

Operator stops automatically for that teammate when their limit is reached.

Note: Credit limits can only be updated for up to 100 teammates per request. Teammate limits are separate from Operator access permission: access controls whether a teammate can use Operator at all; a limit controls how much they can spend.

When your credits run out

By default, Operator stops when you hit your 2,000-credit monthly inclusion. To continue using Operator beyond that, you need to explicitly opt in to pay-as-you-go.

Default: Operator stops at 2,000 credits

Your credit limit is set to 2,000 by default — equal to your monthly inclusion. When your workspace hits that limit, Operator turns off. You'll see a "Limit reached" badge on your credits dashboard and a "Your workspace has reached its usage limit" banner in Operator.

The credits dashboard showing a 'Limit reached' badge, alongside a 'Your workspace has reached its usage limit' banner in Operator.

To resume Operator, increase or remove your limit:

  1. Click Set usage alerts and limits.

  2. Open the Credits tab.

  3. Increase or remove your credit limit.

  4. Click Save — Operator resumes within the next hour.

Note: Removing your limit opts your workspace into pay-as-you-go — any usage above 2,000 credits will be charged at $0.01 per credit.

Opting in to pay-as-you-go

If you want Operator to keep running beyond your 2,000-credit inclusion, you need to opt in by removing or raising your credit limit. Once opted in, any usage above 2,000 credits is charged at $0.01 per credit and billed as a separate line item at the end of your billing period.

The Usage page showing pay-as-you-go overage charges appearing as a separate line item on the bill.

For example, if your workspace uses 2,408 credits in a billing period:

  • Prepaid (included) usage: 2,000 credits

  • Additional (pay-as-you-go) usage: 408 credits at $0.01 each = $4.08

Note: Credits reset at the start of each billing period. If you're on a monthly, quarterly, or annual plan, the reset matches your subscription cycle. To avoid unexpected charges, set an alert threshold before you hit your limit.

Operator permissions

  • Operator access is on by default for all teammates — both full seats and Lite seats.

  • To change access, go to Settings > Workspace > Teammates and select a teammate, and check or uncheck Can access Fin Operator under the Operator section. The change takes effect immediately.

The Teammates settings page showing the 'Can access Fin Operator' checkbox under the Operator section for an individual teammate.

  • You can't change your own Operator access — ask a teammate to enable it for you.

  • Teammates without access see a blocked state on the Operator page and won't see the "Ask Operator" prompt elsewhere in the workspace.

  • Operator respects your existing teammate permissions — it can't be used to do anything a teammate couldn't already do directly in Intercom.

  • If you cancel Pro, Operator access is removed regardless of any remaining credit balance.

Note: Viewing and editing teammate credit limits requires the Can manage hard limit permission. Teammates with the Can manage teammates, seats and permissions permission can view credit consumption but can't view or edit teammate limits.

FAQs

Is Operator included in my Pro add-on or is it a separate add-on?

Operator is included with your Pro add-on — there's no separate add-on to purchase. Every Pro workspace gets 2,000 free Operator credits per month as part of the plan. If you use more than your monthly inclusion, additional usage is charged at $0.01 per credit on a pay-as-you-go basis.

What is a credit?

Credits are units Fin uses to measure and pay for Operator usage across your workspace. Everything Operator does — analyzing your support data, debugging and testing Fin, authoring and editing procedures, and improving your content and guidance — consumes credits. The number of credits an action consumes reflects the work involved, so heavier actions use more.

How do I use credits in Operator?

The number of credits a chat or action uses reflects the work Operator does: a quick question uses very little, while building or testing a procedure uses a lot more. An action costs the same number of credits for every customer, regardless of plan.

The table below shows example Operator prompts and their median credit cost. Credit consumption reflects task complexity — simple lookups use fewer credits, while building or testing a procedure uses significantly more.

I had early access to Operator — what happens next?

Early access customers receive an additional 30 days of free Operator access from the general availability date (August 6th). After September 6th, you'll need an active Pro add-on to continue using Operator. To keep your access, add Pro via Settings > Subscription > Billing before the grace period ends.

Do I need to do anything to set up Operator after adding Pro?

No setup required. Once your Pro add-on is active, Operator is enabled by default for all teammates. Go to Operator in the navigation menu to start your conversation thread.

What happens when I run out of credits?

By default, Operator stops when your workspace hits 2,000 credits — overages don't apply automatically. To keep using Operator past your monthly inclusion, you need to opt in: go to Settings > Subscription > Usage, click Set usage alerts and limits, open the Credits tab, then increase or remove your limit and click Save. Any usage above 2,000 credits is charged at $0.01 per credit and appears as a separate line item on your bill.

What's the difference between a rate limit error and running out of credits?

These are two different issues — here's how to tell them apart.

A rate limit means too many requests were sent too quickly. It's a temporary limit, usually shown as 429 Too Many Requests. It clears automatically — just wait a moment and try again.

Running out of credits means you've used your full credit allowance or hit your spending cap. It's a billing issue, not a speed one. To resolve it, you'll need to add credits, raise your limit, or wait for your next billing period.

Can I set a hard limit on my Operator spend?

Yes. Go to Settings > Subscription > Usage > Credits, choose Set usage alerts and limits, enable Limit, enter your maximum credit amount, and save. Operator stops immediately when that limit is reached — even if credits remain.

Because 1 credit costs $0.01, a limit of 10,000 credits equals a maximum of $100 in additional usage.

Tip: Your default limit is set to your included credits. Only raise or remove it if you want to allow pay-as-you-go usage beyond your plan.

Can I buy extra credits upfront?

You can't purchase credits upfront. Once your 2,000 monthly free credits are used, additional usage is charged on a pay-as-you-go basis at $0.01 per credit. Credits reset at the start of each new billing cycle and don't carry over.

When do my credits reset?

Credits reset at the start of each billing period and don't carry over. If you're on a monthly, quarterly, or annual plan, the reset matches your subscription cycle. If you're on a contracted plan, check Settings > Subscription > Billing for your exact reset date and credit allocation.

Is Operator usage billed separately from my Pro subscription?

Your Pro add-on includes 2,000 free Operator credits each month. If you use more than your monthly inclusion, the additional usage appears as a separate line item on your bill at $0.01 per credit.

Is Operator access unlimited on Pro?

No. Operator is included with every Pro add-on, but access is credit-based — not unlimited. Your plan comes with 2,000 free Operator credits per month. By default, Operator stops when your workspace hits 2,000 credits. To keep using Operator past your monthly inclusion, you need to explicitly opt in to pay-as-you-go. Any usage above 2,000 credits is charged at $0.01 per credit.

I'm on an Early Stage plan — do I get free Operator credits?

Early Stage plan customers get 2,000 free Operator credits per month, the same as other self-serve plans. Usage above this is charged on a pay-as-you-go basis at $0.01 per credit.

Does using Operator via the MCP consume credits?

Yes. The Operator MCP consumes credits in the same way as using Operator directly in the product. Every action taken via the Operator MCP draws from your workspace's Operator credit allocation. Your workspace and teammate usage limits apply as normal.

Note:

  • The Operator MCP is currently in closed beta and only available to a limited set of customers.

  • Using the Intercom MCP does not consume any Operator credits.

When I use the Operator MCP, do I use my own login or workspace credentials?

You authenticate with your own teammate credentials via OAuth, the same as logging in to your Intercom workspace and using Operator directly. Everything is scoped the same way as your regular Operator session, including your permissions, teammate limits, and workspace access.
